Why Glycerin

Colour: Completely clear
Finish: Clear, translucent or brightly coloured

Glycerin base is our clear base, and the one for anything you want to see inside the bar. Colour stays bright instead of turning pastel.

For flowers, the recipe book's method is to spritz the empty mold with rubbing alcohol, lay the petals in, spritz again and then pour. Lavender, thyme, hibiscus, violets and cornflowers all work. To hold an object in the middle of the bar, as in the mermaid recipe, let the melted base cool until the top just starts to skin over, stir, and pour around the object while a skewer holds it in place.

Clear base is also a good canvas for dark or textured bars: the shaving and beard recipe adds honey, jojoba oil and activated charcoal, and the peppermint recipe stirs in coconut oil and dried mint. Layer it with an opaque base for two-tone bars.

Good to know

Will dried flowers stay visible in the glycerin base?

Yes. The base is clear, so petals, botanicals and embeds stay visible inside the bar, the way the lavender recipe in the book uses them.

How long does the glycerin base keep?

It has a 36-month shelf life.

Why does my clear soap sweat?

The base is rich in glycerin, which draws moisture from the air. Wrap each bar airtight once it has set and store it somewhere dry, and the beads won't come back.

Why did my clear soap turn cloudy?

Usually the base got too hot, a creamy base was mixed in, or mica was used: it adds shimmer but takes away some clarity. Melt in short bursts and use soap dye for see-through colour.
